Beyond the Three R’s   -Voter Attitudes toward 21st century skills

http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/

WASHINGTON, DC - Oct. 10, 2007 - A new, nationwide poll of registered voters reveals that Americans are deeply concerned that the United States is not preparing young people with the skills they need to compete in the global economy. An overwhelming 80 percent of voters say that the kind of skills students need to learn to be prepared for the jobs of the 21st century is different from what they needed 20 years ago. Yet a majority of Americans say that schools need to do a better job of keeping up with changing educational needs.

What kinds of computer skills do students need to be successful now?

How have jobs changed in the last 20 years?

What skills do you think you will need to be successful in high school and beyond?

I think that as the world evolves to new technologies we have to learn and absorb to these things such as when about 20 years ago the internet was invented this created many new jobs which looked at things differently than the normal such as building things with lights that told the world abut something and created a lot of difference. for high schoolers all we would have to have would be is an upgrade coarse (a rerun through it) thats all i could think about with the current technologies being teached.

I think that computer skills students need are email, typing, powerpoints, and trouble shooting. There are other skills that can be used such as flash and fireworks but these will be needed less.

Jobs have changed in many ways over the last 20 years. Computer programmer is a popular career while 20 years ago it wasn’t common. Also most jobs require the use of the computer. Even if it is something as simple as typing up flyers.

There are many skills that are needed to be used to do well in highschool and beyond. The most important ones are typing, being prompt, getting your priorities in order, and public speaking.

The computer skills that students need to be successful now include typing, researching on the internet, how to use basic programs (such as Excel and Power Point), and how to write a formal email.

Typing is a necessary skill, because it makes your papers appear more professional. Also, typing is necessary to use the computer in any other way, such as internet research.

The internet has a vast amount of information, some of it creditable and some of it not. As research on the internet is necessary for completing high school, not to mention collage, it is important to learn how to find creditable information among the vast amount of junk. Using the internet is applicable in situations outside of school, for example, it is a valuable resource for finding a job.

Basic knowledge of programs such as Excel and Power Point is essential because in many jobs you need to use these programs, for example you may need to use Excel to organize finances of Power Point to share your ideas with an audience.

Email has replaced letters and phone conversations as the main form of communication. It is also useful in many situations, for example you can email your teachers work when your absent, and email is necessary for many jobs, if only for communicating with your coworkers and boss.

Students need to be prepared for the 21st century and some of the skills they need are email, basic use of simple programs, the internet as a resource, and typing.

The kind of computer skills that students need to be succesfull now depends on the profession they want to go into. If they wanted to be a CEO of a company they would need to know typing, how to use power point, word, and computer skills needed to put a presentation together. Say they wanted to be an accountant, they would have to know how to use excel, and other programs that can help dealing with money. The basic computer skills that every student needs to know to become succesful is how to type, use word documents, using the internet, and many other programs that could help them later in life.

Jobs have changed in the last 20 years by now we have machines working in factories which puts factory workers out of the picture. But 20 years ago many company’s didn’t have machines to do the work. Jobs have become more high tech and need a lot more computer skills to be able to preform. Another example of how jobs have changed in the last 20 years is accountants. Now that we have these advanced computers keeping track of your money has been a lot easier. Accountants used to have to deal with people’s money in books but now it’s all on the computer.

The skills I believe that I need to succeed in High School and beyond are presentation skills like making more advanced power points and other presentations. Learning how to use excel and programs that deal with numbers. Those are the skills that I believe I need to succeed in High School and beyond.

to be successful the skill needed in computers a higher than ever. You need to be able to not only program a computer but to be able to build it.
this was not demanded 20 years ago.
and can be beneficial in the future.
    now…

I think that the children of today need to be able to design applications for computers as well as be able to fix and build one. the internet presents many opprotunities for programming and designing. Children should take advantage of these websites and learn to program apps as well as learn how a computer works.

  7.   julioon 03 Dec 2007 at 12:14 pm 7

The most important computer skill for us to know is use of the internet. To find a good website to search on. We must expand on what we use the internet for.

The children of today should know how to be a tech support rep they should be able to figure out any problem that can happen on a computer. When they can do that they will be ready for high school and beyond

The most important computer skill we need is use of internet. how we expand on the way we search, type, and how we use the information that we recive.
The way jobs have changed because we have email to communicate. The skill I will need to succed in highschool will be typing. Typing, because of the things we will need to do.

The kinds of computer skills kids need to be successful are Internet use and media management (videos, music, pictures), because they’re the main reasons most people have computers nowadays.

Twenty years ago, computers weren’t as involved in jobs as they are today, because they were simpler, and the Internet did not exist at the time, and computers could not display videos, play music or view photos. DOS was the big system at the time, and Mac OS and Windows were just getting started.

The skills we need to be successful in high school and beyond would probably be the media management and Internet use I mentioned earlier.

A lot of things have changed and schools require more than just typing skills. Students now have to be able to use the internet, create a powerpoint presentation, use flash and fireworks in certain classes.

There are tons more job options in todays world just because of the technology leap. For example more advanced computers call for more experts as a result computer task forces have been setup all over the world (geek squad). There also are job shorts due to technology. For example factories are being taken over by automated robots/machines resulting in mass firings all over the world. So in 20 years a couple of doors have opened and at the same time windows have closed.

The skills that are required in high School are the want for success and the ability to get things done no atter how big the task.

I believe that the skills needed to be successful are, being able to type quickly and accurately, using an e-mail, good presentation skills, excel, and having a basic under standing of computer programing.

The ways that jobs have changed in the past 20 years make it so that you no longer need to do a large amount of real work the computer will do it fore you if it has the rite programing.

Students need to have fairly advanced computer skills to be successful. Some classes have requirements to type papers, make graphs, and even do entire presentations. Students should be able to at least browse the internet, type up a paper and make a acceptable power point presentation. However to be successful you need to know a lot about the computer. The usage of computers in much higher than it was a few years ago. So in turn the skills on the computer have increased as well.
Jobs have changed immensely in the last 20 years. The computer itself has changed and progressed so much in the past year that in the last 20 years the changes are so vast. Job-wise the needs of our nations have changed and even increased, so of course the jobs have changed. We used to have people for every little thing in a factory, but there have been machines that have been invented that take the place of those specific jobs. Technology is one source of why jobs change.
When I’m in high school (shout out to EAST!) the demand of advanced computer skills will surely increase. The skills needed for middle school are already pretty advanced. I have to be able to make a power point presentation, make a song, make a music video etc. already so I imagine I will do that in high school, but to an even higher degree. The more I learn about technology the more successful I will be. The skills I believe that I will need in high school are probably to make graphs and table and maybe to make creative projects. The main skill is to probably know how to type a paper and use the programs that add to the paper. Otherwise known as how to indent, underline, highlight, bold, or italicize words.

The computer skills one needs to be successful now is knowledge of basic computer programs, such as word, power point and excel. one also needs to know how to use the internet, email and databases properly.

jobs have changed quite a bit thanks to the new technological advances. many jobs have been created and recreated thanks to these advances(computer programming).

the skills one needs to be successful in the future are as i said before, basic computer program knowledge, knowing how to type, etc.
one also needs to know how to be responsible with their work to be successful. these are the basics (it also depends how you define “successful.”).

What kinds of computer skills do students need to be successful now?
You need Word, Power Point, Excel and good internet search techniques.
How have jobs changed in the last 20 years?
Most people did not have computers at their disposal so a lot of math, cashiering and information searches were done by hand.
What skills do you think you will need to be successful in high school and beyond?
You would need all the skills you need now as well as emailing blogging and other forms of internet communication.

  16.   Lindsey Ketterer (!!)on 03 Dec 2007 at 12:51 pm 16

To be successful now, students need to have basic computer skills. These skills include knowing how to browse the Internet, type, send formal emails, and use certain programs. Email is basically the way of communication nowadays. It is important to know how to send a formal email because you cannot talk to a dean or someone from a future school you want to attend in shorthand. It’s not acceptable to say “im glad 2 apply 4 dis skool.” Programs like Word, Powerpoint, and Xcel are important to know how to use because many teachers require papers to be typed. Powerpoint is also a good program to know because when presenting a class project, it can be very useful. Xcel is important to know because using the formulas can be beneficial for certain math projects, et cetera.

Jobs have changed over the past 20 years drastically. Many people used to work in factories and perform hard labor everyday. Today, mostly everything is done by robotics and computers. Instead of doing the manual labor, jobs operating the systems are more in demand. More women have been getting into the fields of math and science as well. That is a good thing since math and science were considered “male” subjects.

What skills do you think you will need to be successful in high school and beyond?
Skills that you need to have in order to be successful in high school and beyond include computer skills, people skills, and motivation. Computer skills include Powerpoint, Excel, Word, email, and Internet surfing. People skills include being professional in your speech, being nice, and having a positive attitude. Motivation is key for successful in our society and in high school. If you are not motivated, you are not living up to your potential. Also, you will fall behind and not get good grades. or a good job.

Students need a whole lot of different computer skills these days, being because its a digital world. However, in current education, computing skills are not as important as they could be. There are only a few schools where they want you to use laptops or computers, but not enough for it to be a big subject. Students should not be graded on things that are not important for their future. For example, math and writing skills are important, but learning about shakespeare isn’t so much. An example in computing is that students should be taught how to use the computers features, programs, and how to use a word prossesser, but not so much how to make animations or edit pictures. =^)

In 20 years, jobs have changed only slightly. Technology and sciences dont advance fast enough for there to be a huge difference i the way we do things, but it still changes. For example, jobs have gotten alot more digital and reliant on compters, and almost always use communications like cell phones and the internet. =^)

There are many skills that you would need for high school and beyond. These include the ability to solve mathmatical equations and simple math problems, the ability to write good with nice pendmandship, the knoledge of american history and basic history of other countrys, how to use many modern tools such as computers, and much more. =^)

As technology progresses the need for people who can interpret technology increases. Being able to type, navigate computers, or email is almost required by most high paying jobs around the world.

Jobs that used to require hand labor have been taking over by machines. Hours irrigating the field have been changed into an hour by sprinkler systems. Since the job field that requires labor is steady decreasing then the only jobs left are ones involving technology.

To be successful in this generation you must need to know how to operate simple machines. It comes easy to us, but if you have the capacity to learn more you should. It will come in handy throughout the rest of your life. They have classes in high school for you to learn these types of things. You could take HTML and PHP and become a web designer. A job like this would set you for life seeing as the need for websites will most likely never diminish. There are many fields of technological science. Those fields will be able to help you from high school and through the rest of your life.

These days students need to have large expectations on computation skills, due to the fact that technology is growing day by day. Some of these skills include at least knowing how to use a computer in the first place. Students must learn various skills such as animation, typing, activation, using the internet, and using basic computer programs.

In the past 20 years jobs have changed so much that some grown adults have had to go back to college in order to get certain jobs especially, because technology has changed too. Also, now there are jobs that didn’t exist twenty years ago, because such jobs were not needed. Most jobs these days require the capability to use a computer sometimes in an advanced manner.

To be successful in life in high school and beyond that you would need skills for knowing about today’s modern society and how that all works. This would include being aware of the people surrounding you and how they live in modern society.

The general skills required 20 years ago are very different form the ones required today. The changes in technology include how information is transfered, communication methods, and the expectations for work skills. With the digital revolution, many jobs have become more profitable and thus larger industries. Things like tech support, computer programming, and anything else related any new technology, such as the Internet. As high school and whatever else happens after it requires getting a job (mostly) the skills needed for high school and beyond are those that will help you get a job, thus with the many computer related jobs, computer related skills. These skills include, typing, using various common programs (ex. Word, any browser, spreadsheets, etc.), or being able to find things on the internet. These are the sort of skills that are needed to be successful.

Since the computer is the main source of our economy today, it is important for us as students, to adapt only certain computer skills earlier in life. The computer skills that I think are needed right now for students of 13 or 14 are the skills of e-mail, typing, and internet direction. E-mail is essential to the time of now because in the future e-mail will be the main source of communication. Also, teachers will be assigning things that will be required to be typed, in this case it would be helpful to know how to type and if your printer decides to malfunction, then you will always have the option of e-mailing it to them as well. Lastly, I believe that internet direction is essential because, putting it plainly, the internet has become the new research book. This translates into that in the world of school, you will be required to do research. With this in mind, how many people do you know who want to get off their couch and get a possibly heavy book from the library? Well it’s also faster on the internet, and with this you have to have the skill to know how to use it.
Jobs have changed a lot in the last 20 years, so with that comes a lot of new sills to learn for high school and beyond. Jobs have changed with the influences of technology a lot. For example, CEOs of companies need to have the skills to type now and e-mail so that they will be looked at in a more professional manner. These skills will also be needed in high school. Another skill needed in high school and beyond which has changed jobs is the internet and calculating on a computer. Now accountants the old fashioned hand calculater is gone and they can save everything to a computer. Lastly, the careers of America have changed by having less filing issues because now computers are the new filing. All in all, computer technology has influenced the world to change all sorts of things.

Now people work in fast food more and other jobs can be controlled by robots such as factory assembly lines. Also as more technology is invented people get different jobs.

In order to be successful you need skills at basic literature and stuff and new technological skills.

Because of more technology students need to use computers more. But still being able to search on a search engine could suffice.

I think that some skills students need are typing, powerpoint, how to search the internet, excel, email, etc. etc. etc.

The way some jobs have changed in 20 years is they now use machines programmed with computers. also the fact that they dont need to hire as many employees to work on the job that once needed more people.

I think that i will need the skills that i mentioned before. I think that i will also need to know how to use other skills like flash and dreamweaver for my high school.

Students need to know how to use programs like microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, etc to be successful. understanding these programs will make projects/work better, and easier to do.

in the last 20 years technology has changed greatly thus allowing people to gain new jobs. these jobs include video game designing electronic engineering, etc. these jobs require an understanding of the ne electronics that are available today.

I believe that in highschool student need to be organized neat and on time with there their work, because teachers in highscool WILL NOT accept sloppy late (or on time) work PERIOD.
